Updates:
Lorraine began the meeting by sharing how Vets Park will be completely wireless, hopefully by the middle of January 2012. This will be the first school in district to have this capability! She further explained the long term goal of hopefully being able to fund Baird Middle School next year (2012-13) and Ludlow High School the following year (2013-14) to be wireless.
She informed the committee that she was able to purchase 7 netbooks for one 5th grade classroom, with a wireless access point for small group centers. This particular classroom also has a SMARTBoard and 5 additional computer stations.
Lorraine also confirmed that she was able to place and order for an additional 50 netbooks that will be deployed in two classrooms: 25 in a 5th grade and 25 in a 4th grade classroom. These two classrooms will be the first 1:1 classroom environments in the LPS.
AUP/BYOD: This open discussion included the following observations and comments:Lorraine posed the question: "What do you see students being able to do with cell phones/devices in school. This led to the following responses:
  • calculator
  • take pictures/videos for projects
  • cell phones could be used to gather information by using the internet` it could be done much faster.
  • students can work together
  • use texting for responses
  • there would need to be rules and all teachers would need to enforce them.
  • teachers should be able to take a cell phone/device away at any time if they are being misused.
  • teacher should be able to look at what a student is doing
  • can't pretend cell phones don't exist
  • teachers should not be expected to use their own devices
  • some teachers are fearful of having students bring/use a cell phone/device in their classroom
  • the students who were present felt that they would "self police" each other to ensure the privilege is not taken away
  • Lorraine posed the possibility of having a pilot program at BMS and L
Other Topics Discussed:
  • possibility of a "family plan" for those parents who do not have funds for hardware or internet access at home
  • the need for LPS to supplement hardware for those students who do not have access
  • teachers were inquiring about the possibility of creating student accounts at both Vets and BMS-- maybe using Google Apps?
  • the next tech meeting will be held in the evening to accommodate those who can not make the late afternoon meetings- it is scheduled for February 1, 2012 at BMS at 7:00PM. Lorraine will send out a connect-ed and will post the information on X2 as remider.
